Can a radon mitigation system interfere with my fireplace's draft, or vice versa?
Usually not, because they work on different air. A standard sub-slab radon fan pulls soil gas from under the slab and vents it above the roof — it doesn't depressurize your living space, so it leaves fireplace draft alone. The real interference risk is the opposite direction: an open fireplace or exhaust fan depressurizing a tight house and disturbing draft. The two systems must stay separate.
How they normally coexist
A properly designed sub-slab depressurization system draws radon from beneath the concrete — the soil side — and pushes it out a dedicated pipe above the roofline with its own fan. It's a sealed loop that barely touches the air you breathe, so it doesn't rob a fireplace of draft or pull smoke back down a flue. In most WNC homes the two run side by side without ever noticing each other.
Where trouble actually shows up
Problems come from house depressurization, not the radon fan itself. In a tight home running an open wood fireplace plus a big kitchen or bath exhaust, the house can go negative enough that a natural-draft flue struggles — cold flue, sluggish start, or backdraft. That's a combustion-air and draft issue we diagnose regardless of radon. The one hard rule: a radon vent and a combustion flue never share a pipe or a termination — they're separate systems, kept separate, period.
