Yes — much of Western North Carolina sits in the EPA's highest radon-potential zone; our granite and gneiss bedrock naturally produces it. A fireplace doesn't create radon, but the wrong kind can pull more of it indoors by depressurizing the house. A sealed direct-vent gas fireplace is essentially radon-neutral because it never uses your indoor air.
The mountains are a radon region
Buncombe, Henderson, Transylvania, Haywood and much of the surrounding high country fall into the EPA's top radon zone. The same crystalline bedrock that gives us our ridges also gives off radon gas, which seeps up through cracks in slabs and crawlspaces. Radon has nothing to do with hearth work — but because it enters from below, anything that changes the air pressure in your home can change how much comes in. We're a fireplace and gas company, not a radon-testing outfit, so if you've never tested, get a test; it's cheap and it's the only way to know your number.
How a fireplace enters the picture
An open masonry fireplace or a wood stove that draws air from the room sends a lot of that air up the chimney. Something has to replace it, and in a home with a crawlspace, some of that make-up air is soil gas pulled up through the floor — the stack effect. So a roaring open fire can briefly raise indoor radon by depressurizing the living space. It's usually modest, but in a home that already tests high, it's worth accounting for.
The pick that sidesteps it
A sealed direct-vent gas fireplace pulls its combustion air from outside through a coaxial pipe and exhausts the same way — it never touches your indoor air, so it doesn't depressurize the house or worsen radon. That's a big part of why direct-vent is our default for tight modern homes. A fireplace won't fix an existing radon problem; that's a mitigation contractor's job.
