Are ventless gas logs cheaper to run than vented gas logs?
Yes — dramatically, if you measure by warmth delivered. Ventless logs burn with the damper closed and keep essentially all their heat in the room, up to 99.9% efficient. Vented logs burn with the damper open, and most of their heat goes straight up the chimney. Burning the same gas, ventless puts several times more usable heat where you live.
Same burner math, very different results
A gas log set's fuel use is set by its BTU input — the valve doesn't care whether the heat stays in your den or leaves through the flue. So hour for hour at a similar flame height, a vented and a ventless set can burn comparable amounts of gas. The difference is what you get for it. A vented set like the Real Fyre Charred American Oak is decorative-first: a tall, realistic yellow flame with the damper locked open, which means most of the heat rides the draft up the chimney. A ventless set like Superior's VRT4036 runs damper-closed and keeps nearly everything it makes in the room. If the goal is warmth per dollar of gas, it isn't a contest.
The rules that come with ventless
Ventless logs earn their efficiency by exhausting into the room, and that comes with real conditions we're upfront about at the counter. They add moisture to the indoor air, they're limited by room size, and they're restricted or prohibited in some applications and jurisdictions — bedrooms and bathrooms in particular. Every unit carries an oxygen-depletion sensor that shuts the burner down if air quality slips. Correctly sized, installed, and maintained, ventless is a legitimate supplemental heater. Oversized and stuffed into a tight little room, it's the wrong product no matter how cheaply it runs.
If you want the flame and the heat
Plenty of folks choose vented logs knowing full well where the heat goes — they're buying the most convincing gas flame there is, not a heater, and on that measure vented wins. If you want both looks and economy, the middle path is a sealed gas insert, which commonly runs 70% efficient or better and turns the fireplace into a genuine heat source.
