How much does it cost to run vented gas logs per hour?

Multiply by your fuel rate for the dollar figure, and remember most of that heat exits up the chimney.
Why the burn rate is so high
Vented logs are engineered for one thing: the tall, rolling yellow flame that looks like a real wood fire — the closest gas gets to the real thing. Getting that flame takes a big burner, and the damper stays open while it runs, so the flue is pulling room air and combustion heat up and out the whole time. That's not a design flaw; it's the product. Vented logs are decorative-first, and judged as ambiance they're glorious. Judged as a heater, they're the most expensive way to burn gas in your house.
Per hour is only half the story
The fuel math is the same as any gas appliance — BTU input divided by 100,000, times your per-therm rate, or divided by 91,500, times your propane price — but the useful-heat math is brutal: a high hourly burn with most of the warmth leaving through the flue. If you're lighting logs nightly for warmth, that pattern is telling you to look at a sealed gas insert instead — commonly 70% efficient or better — or at ventless logs, which keep the heat in the room but carry room-size limits, added moisture, and bedroom and bathroom restrictions. In practice, vented logs get lit the way candles do: holidays, dinner parties, a couple of evenings a week — a few hours at a time, often below full flame — and the hourly rate never snowballs into a painful bill.
