Are vented or ventless gas logs cheaper to buy?
On the set alone, prices overlap so much that neither wins outright. Vented sets span the widest range — from value-priced to premium hand-painted logs like Real Fyre's Charred American Oak — while ventless sets pack more required hardware, a calibrated burner and oxygen-depletion sensor, into a narrower band. The real cost difference shows up after installation, in what each one does with its heat.
Set for set, it's nearly a wash
A vented set is mechanically simpler — your open chimney does the safety work — so the entry point can be lower, but realism costs money, and the convincing hand-cast, hand-painted sets sit at the top of the log market. A ventless set can't be built cheap: the precision burner and ODS shutoff are non-negotiable, which raises its floor. Stand them side by side and the sticker difference is usually smaller than people expect. The heat math is where they truly separate
Vented logs burn with the damper open, so most of their heat leaves up the chimney — you're paying for ambiance, and the flame is gorgeous for it. Ventless logs burn with the damper closed and keep essentially all their heat in the room, which makes them dramatically cheaper per hour of actual warmth — but they carry room-size limits, add indoor moisture, and are off the table for bedrooms and bathrooms. So "which set costs less" is the wrong lens. The right one: are you paying for a flame to look at, or heat to feel?

If you want supplemental heat in a qualifying room, ventless earns its keep — or step up to a sealed gas insert if heating is the main event.
