Can a gas fireplace run on propane if I don't have natural gas service?
Yes — around Brevard, propane isn't the fallback, it's the norm. Much of Transylvania County sits off the natural-gas grid, so the cabins toward Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest and plenty of downtown homes get their gas heat from a propane tank. The fireplace is the same unit; it's just configured to burn LP.

Natural gas follows the region's bigger corridors, and Brevard largely sits outside them — which is why we quote propane here more often than not. That's no compromise. A tank on the property, a regulator, and a properly run line give you the identical flame and heat you'd get on a main. For a timber-frame or mountain-modern home, a Mendota FullView burns beautifully on LP; for a working cabin, a Kozy Heat Springfield 36 is the cold-climate propane workhorse. What matters is that the appliance is set up for propane from the start — smaller burner orifices, LP pressure, a flame tuned blue at the base. Run a gas-configured unit on propane and it soots, dulls to a lazy yellow, and dirties its own glass. Getting the fuel right is the entire job, and it's the part that has to sit with a licensed gas contractor.
Rain is the local enemy
Brevard collects 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture is hard on hearth systems — cracked crowns, spalled brick, rusted dampers, and damp chimney chases are routine here, with the wet season running March through June. That's a strong argument for a sealed, direct-vent propane unit that vents out a sidewall on a coaxial pipe and doesn't lean on a deteriorating masonry flue.
