Can a gas fireplace run on propane if I don't have natural gas service?
Yes — and around Candler, propane is the standard. While the Enka edge nearest Asheville catches some natural gas, out through Hominy Valley, Sand Hill, and the Pisgah Highway side there's no main, so homes get their gas heat from a tank. Your fireplace burns identically on propane once it's configured for LP.
Propane, and a valley that holds air
Candler is propane country once you're past the Enka-Candler edge — the mains that reach the Asheville side don't follow the homes spreading up Hominy Valley and Sand Hill. That geography pairs with a local quirk worth knowing: Hominy Valley forms a natural bowl that can trap air, which is exactly why clean-burning sealed appliances are so attractive here. A sealed direct-vent propane unit takes its combustion air from outside and vents it right back out, so nothing spills into the room or the valley. Configured correctly with LP orifices and propane pressure, it burns clean and blue; configured wrong, propane is the classic cause of a sooting flame — the last thing you want in an air-holding bowl like this one.
Builder-grade boxes, upgraded
Candler's fast growth left a lot of subdivisions with basic decorative builder-grade fireboxes that make a flame but not much heat — and owners here tend to want a real, heat-producing upgrade within a few years of moving in. On propane, that upgrade is a sealed insert or direct-vent unit that actually warms the room instead of just glowing. We run and pressure-test the LP line, set the regulator, fit the orifices, pull the Buncombe County permit, and meet the inspector. Candler is 15 minutes west of our Emma Road showroom, an easy town for install and for the annual propane service that keeps the burner clean. Call (828) 545-0525.
