Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

Are there rules for where the propane tank can be placed when adding a propane fireplace?

Yes — propane tanks have strict setback distances from the house, windows, doors, ignition sources, and property lines, set by NFPA 58 and enforced locally. The exact distance depends on tank size: a small tank sits closer than a 500-gallon tank. The tank itself is coordinated with your propane supplier, while we handle the regulator, piping, and appliance connection.

Setbacks depend on tank size

Yes — propane tank placement is governed by NFPA 58 and enforced locally, and the required distances scale with the tank. A small tank can sit fairly close to the house, while a 500-gallon tank needs a larger setback from the building, from windows and doors, from any ignition source, and from the property line. There are also rules about the distance to where the line enters the house. The bigger the tank, the more room it needs.

Who handles the tank vs. the gas side

Two parties are involved, and it's worth knowing the split. The tank itself — sizing, placement, ownership or lease, and filling — is coordinated with your propane supplier, who sets it to the setback rules. Steady Flame handles the regulator, the gas piping from the tank to the fireplace, and the appliance connection — the licensed side of the work. We permit and pressure-test that piping. Tanks can be above-ground or buried; buried is popular for keeping a clean look on mountain-modern builds.

Propane country in WNC

Out in Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins tucked up our mountain roads, there's no natural-gas main, so propane is how you fuel a fireplace — and we do this constantly. We'll coordinate with your propane company on tank location, then run and connect everything from the regulator in. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
