Are there rules for where the propane tank can be placed when adding a propane fireplace?
In most of Asheville you may not need a propane tank at all — the natural-gas main runs under much of the city. Where a tank is required, its placement follows NFPA 58 clearances from the house, windows, doors, ignition sources, and the property line, and the setback grows with tank size. Your supplier sets it; we connect the licensed gas side.
Where propane still shows up in a gas town
The main reaches Montford, West Asheville, Biltmore Village, and South Asheville's newer construction, so gas is usually a meter, not a tank. But a hillside lot past the last main, or an older North Asheville home the line never reached, still runs on propane. There a small 120-gallon tank can sit fairly close to the wall while a 500-gallon needs a wider buffer from the building and from where the line enters. Being on the main usually makes the whole install simpler. At 2,100 feet, with nights in the 20s well into spring, size a tank for genuine heat, not just ambiance.
