Are there rules for where the propane tank can be placed when adding a propane fireplace?

Around Mars Hill, the rural valleys — Spring Creek, Gabriels Creek — run on propane or wood, so adding a gas fireplace usually means a tank. Its placement follows NFPA 58 setbacks from the house, openings, ignition sources, and the property line, and the distance grows with tank size. Your propane supplier sites it; Steady Flame connects the licensed gas.

Rural means propane

The university core has its conveniences, but head out into Spring Creek, Gabriels Creek, or Forks of Ivy and there's no gas main — it's propane or wood heat. On these rural lots there's generally room to place a tank at its required distance from the building and property line, and the bigger question is sizing it for one of the colder spots we serve. A tank sized for a real Madison County winter means fewer refills when the roads are bad. Wood stoves stay popular out here too, and we install those as well.

Who does what

Your propane company owns the tank: sizing, placement to the setback rules, lease or buy, and filling. Steady Flame is the licensed gas contractor for the regulator, the piping, and the appliance connection. In North Carolina running gas is licensed work — a showroom or handyman can't legally do it. We pull the Madison County permit and pressure-test the line. Where a home leans toward easy, reliable warmth, a sealed direct-vent unit with millivolt or battery-backup ignition also keeps heat on when a storm drops the grid.
