Can a gas line be added to an existing wood-burning fireplace for gas logs?
Yes, and Flat Rock's historic homes are some of the best candidates for it, with a caveat. Many houses here date to the 1800s and have oversized open masonry fireplaces on aging clay flue liners, so we run a licensed natural-gas line into that firebox and set logs, but we assess the old flue before we light anything.
Old fireboxes, older flues
The oversized open hearths in Historic Flat Rock were built for wood, and they pull cold-air drafts straight into the room, comfortable to look at, expensive on your heating bill. A vented gas log set keeps that open, characterful look and burns damper-open, but it leans on the same aging clay liner, and a century-old flue can hide cracks or gaps that only show up under a burner. So we inspect that liner and damper first, and if they are past their prime, we talk through relining rather than firing a new burner up a tired chimney and hoping for the best.
Fixing the draft without losing the character
If your goal is to stop the cold-air draft and actually gain heat while keeping the room's period feel, a sealed gas insert with a properly sized liner slides into the existing masonry opening, tightens up the draftiness, and turns a heat-losing hole into a real heater. Vented logs preserve the wide-open flame; a sealed insert preserves the mantel and surround while fixing the physics behind them. On these irreplaceable old homes we would rather protect the character than gut it, so we will show you both paths and let the house decide which one fits.
