Can a gas line be added to an existing wood-burning fireplace for gas logs?
Yes, and in Weaverville the first question we ask is which kind of firebox you have. The older downtown homes typically have original masonry fireboxes that take a gas-log set beautifully, while the newer Reems Creek construction often has a factory-built prefab box, and that changes the plan. Either way, you are on the natural-gas mains here.
Downtown masonry versus new-build prefab
Weaverville's older downtown houses were built with true masonry fireplaces, and those inefficient original fireboxes are classic conversion candidates, we run a licensed line in, set logs on a burner, and you keep the existing chimney. The rapidly growing Reems Creek subdivisions are a different story, many of those homes have a factory-built prefab firebox that is only rated for what the manufacturer lists, and dropping a generic log set into one is not the correct application. A loose gas-log set generally belongs in masonry, so on a prefab we usually steer you to a listed gas insert instead, and we will tell you which you have before you spend a dime.
Vented or ventless once we know the box
If your masonry firebox checks out, vented logs give the tall realistic flame with the damper open, ambiance first, most of the heat up the chimney. Ventless logs run closed and add real supplemental heat but come with room-size limits, added humidity, and no bedroom or bath use. Weaverville's north-facing valley is slow to warm in spring, so if heat matters more than looks, we will point you toward the ventless set or a sealed insert that turns the old box into a genuine heater.
