Can cracked fireplace glass be replaced, and does it need to be special glass?

Yes, cracked glass on a Brevard fireplace can be replaced, and it must be the correct high-temp ceramic or tempered panel for your model. Out here in propane country, LP burns hotter than natural gas, so the glass takes real thermal stress — and Transylvania's 80-plus inches of rain corrode the clips and frame around it. We source the OEM panel and gasket to match.

Propane and moisture both work against the glass

Brevard is propane territory, and LP burns hotter per unit than natural gas, so a set of orifices and pressures that isn't dialed in right runs the appliance too hot and loads the glass. Then there's the water: 80-plus inches of rain a year, a wet season from March into June, and damp chimney chases and crawl spaces. That moisture rusts the metal clips holding the panel; a corroded clip pinches one edge, and the glass cracks from stress rather than heat alone.

Why a substitute isn't an option

Plain window or plate glass shatters at these temperatures, full stop. Hearth units use ceramic or specially tempered glass, they're not interchangeable, and on a direct-vent fireplace the panel is part of a sealed combustion barrier. Put the wrong glass in and you risk a shatter and, on a sealed unit, exhaust bleeding into the room — not worth the gamble. It has to be the exact type the manufacturer specified for your make and model.

Sourcing it from Asheville

We're 40 minutes southwest of our Asheville showroom at 629 Emma Rd. Bring the model number or a photo of the rating plate, or we'll read it off the unit on the service call and match the OEM panel and gasket from there. We fit it, confirm the seal, and look at the moisture and fuel-setup causes so the replacement doesn't go the same way. Call (828) 545-0525.
