Can I add extra embers or sand to my gas logs?
You can top up embers as they fade over the years, but only with the manufacturer's rock wool, only in the thin amount the manual specifies, and never on a ventless set beyond what's listed. More embers doesn't mean a better glow — it means soot, blocked burner ports, and, on vent-free logs, a real carbon-monoxide risk. Less is safer.
Yes, but by the book
Ember material does fade — the mineral wool loses its brightness after a few seasons of heat — so refreshing it is a normal part of keeping a gas log set looking alive. What you shouldn't do is treat 'more' as 'better.' Use only the ember material the manufacturer supplies or specs for your set (Real Fyre and the other brands sell the exact rock wool), place it in the thin, even layer the manual calls for, and keep it over the burner ports where it'll glow — never packed on in a thick mat. Never substitute cotton, aftermarket 'glowing embers' of unknown material, or anything not listed for that burner.
More is where it goes wrong
Homeowners pile on embers or extra sand chasing a bigger glow and end up with the opposite of what they wanted: a flame starved for air that burns yellow and dirty, soot climbing the logs and glass, and mineral wool actually blocking the ports so the burner fires unevenly. On a vented set that means a sooty firebox and a service call. The fix is almost always to take material off, not add it. If your set already soots, adding embers only makes it worse.
Ventless sets: don't freelance
This matters most on a vent-free (ventless) log set, where all the combustion happens right in your room. Those burners are certified as a complete system — specific logs, specific ember placement, an oxygen-depletion sensor — and adding embers, sand, or extra media where it isn't specified can disrupt the clean burn the certification depends on, producing soot and carbon monoxide with nowhere to go. On a ventless set, follow the manual to the letter and change nothing about the ember layout.
