Why do propane log sets use vermiculite instead of sand?
Because propane is heavier than air and behaves differently at the burner. On natural-gas sets, silica sand over the ports lets the lighter gas diffuse up evenly; with propane, sand packs too tight and can cause popping, delayed ignition, and uneven flame. Vermiculite is lighter and more porous, so propane flows through it cleanly. Using the wrong medium is a real safety issue.
It comes down to how the gas moves
Gas log sets use a granular medium over the burner pan for two reasons: it hides the metal burner, and it helps the gas spread across all the ports so the flame lights evenly end to end. Natural gas is lighter than air and diffuses upward easily, so a bed of silica sand works fine — the gas rises through it and ignites across the pan. Propane (LP) is the opposite: it's heavier than air, so it wants to pool and creep rather than rise. Pack propane under dense, fine sand and the gas gets trapped and released in slugs — you get delayed ignition, a startling 'poof,' popping, and a lazy, uneven flame. Vermiculite — a light, puffy, porous mineral — lets propane migrate through and off-gas gently, so the burner lights smoothly.
Why this isn't just a preference
This isn't decorative nitpicking. A propane burner bedded in sand can accumulate unlit gas and then light with a delayed flash — at best startling, at worst dangerous. It also tends to soot and burn inefficiently. Manufacturers spec vermiculite for LP sets specifically to prevent that pooling-and-flashing behavior, and the model's manual tells you which medium and how much. If someone converted a set from natural gas to propane and left the sand in — or dumped sand on an LP burner to 'fill it out' — that's a setup we'd correct on sight.
