Can I burn compressed wood bricks in a wood stove?

Yes — compressed wood bricks (also called densified fire logs or heat logs) are excellent in a wood stove. They're just kiln-dried sawdust pressed under high pressure, with no glue and very low moisture, so they burn hot, clean, and long. Start with fewer than you'd expect: they put out serious heat and can over-fire a stove if you overload the firebox.

Why they burn so well

Compressed bricks are squeezed down to roughly five to ten percent moisture, versus about twenty percent for even well-seasoned cordwood. That dryness means more heat per pound, far less creosote, and less ash to clean out. They're also consistent, bug-free, and stack tidy — a genuine advantage in our damp mountain climate, where keeping a woodpile dry is half the battle. A lot of folks keep a stack of bricks in the garage as clean, reliable backup fuel.

Don't overload — they pack a punch

Because they're so dry and dense, a full firebox of bricks can over-fire your stove, running it hotter than it's rated for. Start with two or three, learn how your stove's air controls respond, and build from there. Follow the manufacturer's guidance on how many to load at once — this is the one place people get bricks wrong, treating them like ordinary logs and cooking the appliance.

Bricks versus cordwood

It's a tradeoff between convenience and cost. Bricks store clean and dry, light easily, and burn efficiently; good cordwood is usually cheaper by the BTU if you have space to season it.
