Can I use manufactured fire logs (like Duraflame) in my fireplace or insert?

In an open wood-burning fireplace, yes — burn one manufactured log at a time and follow the wrapper. In a wood stove or insert, check the manual first: many makers say no, because these wax-and-sawdust logs can over-fire a closed appliance and leave a greasy residue on the glass and combustor. They're for ambiance, not real heat, and never for a gas fireplace.

Open fireplace: fine, with limits

Manufactured fire logs are built to burn one at a time in an open masonry or prefab wood fireplace. Set one down, light the wrapper, and let it go — don't poke at it, don't stack a second one on top, and don't pile real cordwood over it. They're engineered to burn steadily for a couple of hours and produce less smoke than a wood fire, which makes them a low-effort choice for an ambiance night when you don't feel like tending a real fire.

Stoves and inserts: read the manual

Closed appliances are a different story. A wood stove or insert controls its combustion air tightly, and a wax-based fire log can flare and over-fire in that sealed environment, or leave a sticky residue on the glass and on a catalytic combustor. A number of manufacturers — Regency among them — specifically tell you not to use them. Check your appliance's listing and owner's manual before you toss one in; when the maker says no, they mean it.

Never in a gas fireplace

This part isn't a maybe. A gas fireplace isn't built to burn anything solid — no wood, no manufactured logs, nothing but its own gas flame. Dropping a fire log onto a gas burner will crack the glass, foul the burner, and create a real hazard. If you like the idea of a hands-off flame, a gas log set or gas insert is the tool for that.
