Can I close the glass doors while my gas logs are burning?
It depends on the log type. With vented gas logs, keep the glass doors open while burning — closing them traps heat and soot and can crack the glass or warp the doors. Ventless logs also want the doors open, or the mesh only. Add-on fireplace doors are meant to be open during operation and closed only when the logs are off.
Depends on your logs — usually open
For the most common setup — vented gas logs in a traditional fireplace — the glass doors stay open while the logs are burning. Those doors were made to seal an unused fireplace, not to contain a live gas flame.
Closing them on a running vented set traps heat against the glass and blocks the airflow the flame needs, which soots up the glass, can crack the tempered panels, and can warp the door frame. Doors open when it's lit, closed only when the logs are off.
Ventless and the ambient trap
Ventless logs follow the manufacturer, but the answer is nearly always the same — doors open, or the decorative mesh curtain only. A ventless burner needs room air to work, and its ODS safety needs to sample that air; closing glass doors around it interferes with both.
There's no version of running open-hearth gas logs with the glass shut to keep the heat in that's actually safe. If keeping heat in the room is the goal, that tells us you want a different appliance.
Where closed glass is normal
The confusion usually comes from sealed gas fireplaces — direct-vent units and gas inserts — where the glass front is fixed in place and stays closed by design, because the whole combustion chamber is sealed and vented as a system.
