Can I connect my gas fireplace to my home thermostat, like a Nest?
Not directly — a Nest is a low-voltage thermostat built for a furnace or heat pump, and it isn't rated to switch a gas fireplace's millivolt valve. Instead, gas fireplaces use their own controls: a remote's thermostat mode or a fireplace-compatible wall thermostat that we wire to the unit. That gives you the same set-a-temperature convenience, done safely and to code.
Why the Nest hookup doesn't work
A Nest, and thermostats like it, are designed to talk to a central heating and cooling system over 24-volt wiring. A gas fireplace runs on a completely different control — typically a millivolt circuit the pilot generates itself, or the fireplace's own electronic module. Wiring a Nest to a fireplace valve isn't a supported or listed setup, and mixing controls that weren't built for each other around a gas appliance is exactly the kind of thing we won't do. So while the idea is reasonable, the specific Nest-to-fireplace connection isn't the right path.
What you actually use instead
The good news is you don't lose the feature. Two clean options give you thermostat control of the fireplace: thermostat mode on the handheld remote, where the remote reads the room and cycles the flame to hold your set temperature, and a dedicated fireplace-rated wall thermostat we mount and wire directly to the unit. Either one lets the fireplace maintain a room at, say, 70 degrees on its own, cycling on and off like a furnace does — just controlled by hardware meant for a hearth.
Leave the wiring to us
Running a wall thermostat to a gas fireplace means landing wires on the gas valve's control terminals — that's work on the fuel-burning appliance, not a DIY thermostat swap, and in North Carolina the gas side is licensed work. We'll add a compatible wall thermostat or set up your remote's thermostat mode on a service visit, test it, and make sure it's safe. Want set-temperature comfort without the Nest headache?
