Can I add a remote control to a gas fireplace that only has a wall switch?
Almost always, yes. Most millivolt gas fireplaces that run off a simple on/off wall switch can have a remote receiver added at the gas valve, giving you handheld on/off and often flame, fan, thermostat, and timer control. It's a common upgrade we do on a single service visit — and because it wires into the gas control, it's our work, not a DIY kit.
How the upgrade works
That wall switch is really just opening and closing the fireplace's valve with two wires. A remote receiver takes the place of — or wires in parallel with — that switch, so instead of the toggle on the wall, your handheld tells the receiver to fire the burner. On a basic millivolt unit that gets you clean handheld on/off. Step up to a fuller remote-and-receiver system and you can add flame-height control, fan control, and the thermostat and timer modes the bare switch never offered. It's one of the more satisfying small upgrades — same fireplace, a lot more convenient.
What determines whether yours qualifies
Most standing-pilot and millivolt fireplaces are good candidates, which covers a big share of the units in older Asheville and Hendersonville homes. The receiver and handset have to match your valve and ignition type, and there needs to be room to mount the receiver near the controls. Very old or unusual valves occasionally aren't compatible, and in that case we'll tell you straight rather than force something. Why it's not an off-the-shelf DIY job
Adding a receiver means connecting to the millivolt terminals on the gas valve — you're working at the fuel control of a gas appliance, and in North Carolina that's licensed territory for good reason.
