Where are the batteries in my gas fireplace remote and receiver, and when should I change them?
The handset takes batteries behind its back cover — usually AAA or a small coin cell. The receiver, the box wired to the valve, holds its batteries (commonly four AAs) behind the fireplace's lower louver or in the control access panel. Change both once a year, ideally at your fall tune-up, before you're depending on the fireplace.
Two sets of batteries, two locations
People forget the fireplace has a second set. The handset is obvious — pop the back cover for its AAA cells or coin battery. The receiver is the hidden one: a small control box wired to the gas valve, usually reached by lifting off or swinging open the lower louver grille, or through the access panel below the firebox. Inside you'll typically find four AA batteries in a holder. Both sets have to have life in them for the remote to work — the handset sends the signal, the receiver acts on it.
Weak batteries look exactly like a broken fireplace
This is one of our most common winter service calls, and it's almost always the receiver. Symptoms of dying receiver batteries: the fireplace ignores the remote, lights then drops out, clicks without catching, or works intermittently on cold mornings. On battery-backup units like a Napoleon, those same receiver batteries are what let the fireplace light during a power outage — so a dead set means no flame exactly when a Helene-style outage makes you want it most. Before you assume the worst, swap in fresh batteries.
Once a year, on a schedule
Change both the handset and receiver batteries annually. The easiest habit is to do it during your late-summer or early-fall service visit, when we're already clearing the off-season spiders and dust out of the pilot assembly and burner.
