How do I turn on my gas fireplace if I lost the remote or the remote battery is dead?
Most gas fireplaces have a manual override, so you're never stranded. Behind the lower louver panel, look for a small switch on the receiver marked REMOTE / OFF / ON — slide it to ON and the burner lights. Many units also have or can add a wall switch. And a dead remote is often just a fresh set of batteries away.
The receiver override switch
Most gas fireplaces have a built-in fallback so a lost or dead remote never leaves you cold. Pop off the lower louver panel and look for the receiver — a small box, often with a three-position switch marked REMOTE / OFF / ON. Slide it to ON and the burner fires directly, no remote needed. This override is standard on electronic and millivolt-with-receiver systems, and it's the fastest way to get heat tonight while you sort out the remote. If your unit has no receiver box, it's likely a millivolt system with a knob you can turn from PILOT to ON by hand instead.
Try fresh batteries first
Before you assume the remote is lost to the ages, swap the batteries — in both the handheld and the receiver. A huge share of the-remote's-dead calls are exactly that: tired cells. The remote usually takes AAAs or a coin cell; the receiver behind the panel often runs on AAs or a 9-volt. If you've got a Napoleon or similar with battery-backup ignition, those same batteries are also what let it light during an outage, so keeping them fresh does double duty here in outage-prone WNC.
A remote that's gone for good
If the remote is truly lost or broken, you're not stuck with the override forever.
