Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

We strongly advise against it. A wood stove needs correct clearances to combustibles, a code-compliant hearth pad, and a properly sized Class A chimney or liner — get any of those wrong and you've got a fire hazard, a draft problem, or an insurance and inspection issue. It isn't gas-licensed work, but it's high-stakes work that should be permitted and done right.

What makes it high-stakes

A wood stove throws serious radiant heat, and that heat is unforgiving of shortcuts. It has to sit at manufacturer-specified clearances from walls, furniture, and anything combustible, on a hearth pad rated to protect the floor. It vents through a correctly sized Class A chimney or liner. Miss the clearances and you can char framing over time; undersize or misroute the flue and you get a stove that won't draft and a room that fills with smoke.

An EPA-certified unit like a Regency Cascades F1500 is a serious heater when it's installed right — and a liability when it isn't.

The permit and insurance angle

Wood stove installs are permitted and inspected for a reason. Permitted work protects your home sale and your homeowner's insurance; a DIY, unpermitted stove can void coverage exactly when you'd need it most — after a fire. The inspector's sign-off is the paper trail that says it was done to code. That protection alone is worth having a pro do it.

Mountain draft reality

Draft is harder up here than the manual assumes. WNC's ridges, valleys, and tall trees cause downdrafts, and a cold flue sits in the chimney like a plug until it's warmed. We size and route the flue for your specific site so the stove drafts clean from the first match. And there's real payoff: wood is the gold standard for grid-independent heat — the homes that stayed warm through Helene were the ones with a working wood hearth. Do it right and it's heat you own outright. Call (828) 545-0525.
