Can I plumb a natural gas patio heater into my outdoor gas line instead of using propane tanks?

In Asheville, yes — most of the city runs on natural-gas mains, so a fixed patio heater feeds straight off your home's supply with no bottles to refill. It has to be a natural-gas model, and running or extending that line is licensed work our crew handles right out of our Emma Road shop.

Where the mains reach

Natural-gas service runs through much of Asheville — Montford, North Asheville, West Asheville, Biltmore Village — which is what makes a hard-plumbed heater practical here rather than a novelty. We tap an existing gas line, size it for the heater's demand, and add a dedicated shutoff so the unit is always ready over a porch or deck. One thing we watch in the older neighborhoods: a century-old Montford home may already carry a modest supply feeding an original masonry fireplace, so we check the whole run before hanging another load on it.

Cool nights make it worth the wiring

South Asheville's newer construction is frequently stubbed for outdoor gas already, which shortens the job to a connection and a pressure test. Either way, at 2,134 feet the evenings stay cool well past spring — nights sit in the 20s into early April — so a permanent heater keeps a covered porch usable long after the grills go quiet. Because the fuel comes off the house, there's no bottle to run empty on the coldest evening with guests on the deck, and no hauling a tank down for a refill.

Permitted, tested, and close by

We pull the Buncombe County permit, set the regulator and pressure for natural gas, and pressure-test the line before it ever carries fuel. Permitted work also protects your homeowner's coverage — unpermitted gas can void it. Because we're headquartered at 629 Emma Rd, a seasonal check or a service call is a short drive, not a half-day trip. Call (828) 545-0525.
