Can my home's large propane tank feed an outdoor fire pit?
Usually yes — your existing propane tank can feed an outdoor fire pit, as long as the tank capacity, regulator, and buried line can carry the added demand. It's one of the cleanest upgrades in propane country: we tap the system, run an outdoor-rated line to the pit, and set it up for LP orifices and pressure. No little cylinders to swap.
The upside of already being on propane
Out in Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins tucked up our mountain roads, most homes run on a buried or above-ground propane tank rather than a gas main. That tank is an asset here. Instead of feeding your fire pit off wobbly 20-pound cylinders you're forever hauling to get refilled, we plumb the pit into the same tank that already serves your furnace, range, or fireplace. You get a permanent, always-ready flame with no cylinder to hide, run out of, or store.
What we check before tapping in
A fire pit is a thirsty appliance — a big burner can pull 60,000 to 90,000 BTUs — so we don't just splice in and hope. We look at whether the tank and its regulator can supply the pit's demand on top of everything else running on a cold night, and whether the existing line has capacity or needs its own branch. Distance matters too: the farther the pit sits from the tank, the larger the pipe has to be to hold pressure. Propane also burns hotter per unit than natural gas and needs the correct orifices and regulator settings, or the flame runs sooty and lazy — one more reason this is sized, not guessed.
One licensed company, permit included
Connecting to a propane system is licensed gas work in North Carolina, full stop. The tank itself stays coordinated with your propane supplier — that's their equipment — but the regulator, piping, shutoff, and appliance setup are ours. We pull the county permit, run and bury the outdoor-rated line, set it for LP, pressure-test it, and meet the inspector before the pit is lit.
