This is the norm, not a workaround
No natural-gas main is the default for most of the mountains, not a problem to solve. The formula around here is simple: natural gas along the Asheville and Hendersonville corridors, propane everywhere else — Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins tucked up our mountain roads. A permanently plumbed propane fire pit works exactly like a natural-gas one; it just runs off a tank on your property instead of a utility main.
If you already heat or cook with propane, even better — in many cases we can plumb the fire pit off your existing tank rather than adding a second one.
Who does what
There's a clean division of labor. The tank itself — the vessel, its placement, and the fuel fills — is coordinated with your propane supplier, since they own or lease and service it. Everything downstream of the tank is ours: the regulator, the buried outdoor-rated piping, the appliance connection, and the setup of the fire pit itself, all permitted and pressure-tested.
That connection is licensed gas work. In North Carolina, running or extending a gas line is a job for a licensed gas contractor — a landscaper or a delivery crew legally can't make that connection. We can, we permit it with your county, and we test every line we run.
Getting the fuel setup right
Propane isn't just natural gas in a tank — it burns hotter per unit and runs at a different pressure, so the fire pit's burner needs the correct orifices and regulator for LP. A unit set up for the wrong fuel soots, runs weak, or wastes gas. We spec the appliance for propane from the start, or convert a compatible unit correctly.
