Can I power my gas fireplace's ignition or blower with a portable generator or battery backup during an extended outage?
In Asheville it comes down to which kind of unit you have. A millivolt fireplace in an older Montford or North Asheville conversion needs no electricity at all. The newer clean-face gas units common in South Asheville use electronic ignition, but most carry AA battery backup, so they light with the grid down. Only the blower needs a generator.
Two Kinds of Asheville Fireplace
Asheville's housing runs two directions, and each answers this question differently. In the historic pockets — Montford, North Asheville, parts of West Asheville — a lot of what we install is a gas insert or log set dropped into original masonry, and those often run on a millivolt valve that makes its own current off the pilot flame. No outlet, no batteries, no generator: it burns through any outage. The newer clean-face and linear units going into South Asheville builds use electronic ignition instead. That needs a spark to light, but most models hide an AA battery-backup pack behind the lower louver for exactly this — flip to battery mode and it lights with the power out.
When the Blower Needs a Generator
The blower is the one piece that genuinely needs power. It's a 120-volt fan bolted to the firebox, and it won't spin on batteries — but here's the part people miss: your fireplace still throws real radiant heat without it. The fan moves warm air around the room faster; it doesn't make the heat. If you want it running during an outage, a portable generator or a battery-and-inverter setup will drive it. Just keep any generator well outside and away from windows — carbon monoxide is the reason that rule exists, and it's not one to bend on a cold night.
