Convert one to a sealed gas insert and you can pick a millivolt model that needs no electricity or an electronic one with battery backup, so it heats during an outage. Only the blower needs a generator.
Outage Heat Inside a Historic Hearth
Flat Rock is one of our most historic towns — a lot of homes date to the 1800s, with big open masonry fireplaces and clay flue liners that have been aging for generations. Those grand old hearths are beautiful and terrible heaters, and they're the wrong thing to depend on in an outage. The satisfying fix is a sealed gas insert set into the existing firebox with a properly sized liner. When we do that conversion, you get to choose your ignition: a millivolt insert that needs zero electricity and lights off its own pilot, or an electronic-ignition model with an AA battery-backup pack. Either one gives you real, power-optional heat inside the original opening.
The Draft Problem the Old Hearth Creates
The open hearth those homes were built around actually works against you — it pulls cold-air drafts down and heated air up the flue, so the room feels colder, not warmer. A sealed insert closes that off and keeps its heat in the room. Its blower is a 120-volt fan that won't run in an outage, but the insert radiates warmth without it; the fan just distributes it. If you want the fan going during a long outage, a generator or battery-inverter runs it — outdoors, away from windows, for carbon-monoxide safety.
