Can I put a gas fireplace in my basement?

Yes, though in Brevard the deciding factor is moisture. With 80-plus inches of rain a year, basements, crawl spaces, and chimney chases here stay damp — which is exactly why a sealed direct-vent gas fireplace suits them. It draws combustion air from outside and exhausts outside, so it never feeds off that humid below-grade air, and it needs no vulnerable chimney.

Sealed combustion beats the damp

Transylvania County's rainfall is the wettest challenge we design around. Open and B-vent appliances rely on room air and an intact flue; in a Brevard basement, both are working against you — musty air feeds a dirtier burn, and the county's crowns, brick, and dampers spall and rust years ahead of drier towns. A direct-vent unit is a closed loop. Nothing about the room's dampness touches the flame, which is one reason it's the right below-grade choice from downtown Brevard out to the Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest cabins.

Weatherproofing the vent termination

Where the vent exits matters more in a rainy climate. We terminate at the correct height above grade and flash it against wind-driven rain so nothing works back into the wall — important on a fully-buried basement where the pipe carries up to the rim joist. On a deep or long run, a power vent moves the exhaust mechanically. And whether you're on natural gas in town or a propane tank out in the coves, we set the fuel side, pull the Transylvania County permit, and meet the inspector. The showroom is 40 minutes northeast. Backup for storm country

Brevard's heavy weather takes the power out, and a direct-vent fireplace with battery-backup or millivolt ignition keeps the lowest level warm when it does — grid-independent heat that WNC came to value after Helene. In a house where the basement is the family room, that's the room you'll want holding its own.
