Can I put gas logs in my existing outdoor wood-burning fireplace?

Usually yes, and in Flat Rock it's often a preservation win. Many homes here date to the 1800s, with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners — a gas log set keeps that historic character while trading wood-hauling for instant flame. We check the old liner and flue first, then feed the logs off the village's natural-gas mains.

Nineteenth-century firebox, twenty-first-century flame

Flat Rock's historic homes carry some of the grandest old masonry we work on — big, deep open fireboxes built when hauling and burning cordwood was simply how you heated. Those oversized openings are wonderful, and they're also a lot of work to run as wood-burners. A vented gas log set lets you keep every bit of the stonework and the character while getting flame at the flip of a switch. Because the opening is large, the set gets sized to fill it and look right, not lost in it.

Aging clay liners get evaluated

The catch with homes this old is the flue. Clay liners from decades past crack, shift, and deteriorate, and a vented log set still drafts up that flue like a wood fire — so its condition is the first thing we evaluate. If the liner's sound, logs are the simple route. If it isn't, we'll walk you through relining or a sealed gas insert, and we'll give you the honest call rather than the easy sale.

Natural gas, permitted and preservation-safe

Flat Rock sits on natural-gas mains, so we typically run a dedicated line from your service to the firebox, sized for the logs and buried outdoor-rated where needed. That connection is licensed work — the mason restoring your historic stone legally can't make it in North Carolina. We do, we permit it with Henderson County, and we pressure-test it, which also protects the home at resale. Call (828) 545-0525.
