Can I replace an old builder-grade gas fireplace with a new model?

Yes, and out in Mills River the first question is your fuel. Many of these rural, large-lot homes run on propane rather than a gas main, so a builder-grade replacement gets configured with LP orifices and the correct pressure. We pull the old unit, check the vent and gas line, handle the Henderson County permit, and usually finish in a day.

Propane on the big lots

Mills River is farmland and forest with homes spread across large parcels, and that spread means a lot of properties never got a natural-gas main — they run on propane tanks instead. A fireplace set up for natural gas will soot and misfire on propane, so on a replacement we install an LP-rated unit or convert it correctly, dial in the pressure, and coordinate the regulator and tank connection with your propane supplier. Connecting that fuel is licensed work in North Carolina, and we permit and pressure-test every line, which a firebox seller legally can't do.

What we confirm on a swap

Before quoting we pull the old builder-grade unit and look at the framing, the rough opening, the gas line and shutoff, and the existing vent. Newer subdivisions have crept into Mills River alongside the older rural homes, so we see a mix of unit ages and conditions. The vent almost always gets replaced — a modern listed fireplace is certified only with its own pipe and termination, and reusing an old chase from a different unit isn't permitted. We route new co-axial venting out the sidewall or roof to match the replacement.

Henderson County permit, and outdoor options

Replacing a fireplace needs a Henderson County permit and inspection, both of which we handle. Mills River's open valley also makes a great setting for a gas fire pit once the indoor work's done. We're 25 minutes south of the Emma Rd showroom — call (828) 545-0525 or visit to compare Kozy Heat and Napoleon units.
