Builder-grade gas fireplaces were often the cheapest unit that met the spec when the house went up, and after 15 or 20 years they look dated, run inefficiently, and sometimes won't light reliably. Replacing one with a modern direct-vent unit is a straightforward swap that transforms the room. None of it needs to be a teardown — it's a swap, done in a day for most homes. You get a cleaner face, better flame, real efficiency, and — with millivolt or battery-backup ignition on many models — heat that still works when the grid goes down, which matters up here.
What we check before quoting
Every replacement starts by confirming what you have. We pull the old unit and look at the framing and rough opening, the existing vent run, the gas line size and shutoff, and the electrical if the new model wants a plug. The big question is venting: newer fireplaces are tested only with their own specific vent components, so you often can't just clip a new unit onto old pipe or mix brands. Sometimes the run reuses cleanly; often we re-vent to match the new unit's listing. We size the gas line to the new BTU load too, since a bigger unit may want more fuel than the old one drew.
Choosing the replacement
This is a chance to right-size and upgrade.
