Can I replace broken fireplace glass with regular glass?

No — out in Mills River, where many homes run on propane, a broken fireplace pane still can't be replaced with regular glass. Propane burns hotter per unit than natural gas, and the ceramic pane is built to take that thousand-plus-degree heat; window or tempered glass cracks or explodes. It's cut to your model and sealed with a gasket — only the factory-matched panel is safe.

Propane country and the sealed pane

Mills River's rural large-lot properties and newer developments sit amid farmland and forest, and a lot of them heat with propane rather than a gas main. On a sealed direct-vent LP unit — think a Kozy Heat Springfield 36, the kind of workhorse we like for propane homes — the ceramic pane is the front of the sealed combustion chamber, and the gasket around it keeps exhaust outside. Propane also runs hotter and needs the right orifices and pressures; a mis-set LP burner can soot and coat that glass, which sometimes gets mistaken for a failing pane. Either way, the fix is a factory panel matched to the exact model, not a cut-to-size piece — and if the glass is only sooted, that's a burner and tune-up call, not a glass call.

Outdoor season and honest fixes

The open Mills River valley is made for outdoor living, and gas fire pits — which are open flame, no glass — are a separate project best planned in late spring. But for the indoor sealed units, replacing a cracked pane properly means seating the factory ceramic panel, laying fresh gasket rope, and confirming the seal. Most brands we carry still make these panels, and we service every major hearth brand regardless of who installed it. We're about 25 minutes south, so we confirm the unit before ordering. Don't run it with a cracked pane — call (828) 545-0525.
