Can I replace my traditional fireplace with a modern linear one?
Yes. Sylva sits in Jackson County, and we permit and inspect a fireplace conversion here the same way we do anywhere — pulling the county permit and meeting the inspector on site. We remove the traditional firebox and frame in a sealed, direct-vent linear, capping the old flue that river-valley moisture has usually worn down.
Permitted and inspected, county line or not
Being outside our home county doesn't change the process: a modern conversion is licensed gas work, and we pull the Jackson County permit, run and pressure-test the line, and have the inspector sign off. Connecting fuel is exactly what a showroom or a mason legally can't do — one of the reasons to keep the whole job under one accountable company rather than stitching it across trades an hour apart.
The Tuckasegee valley is hard on flues
Cold-air drainage and river moisture along the Tuckasegee rust dampers and degrade flue liners faster here than in drier towns, and the older masonry chimneys around Dillsboro show it. A direct-vent linear sidesteps a failing flue entirely — we cap the chimney and vent the new sealed unit out a nearby wall. One option for heavy-use rentals
For the student and rental housing near WCU that gets used hard and maintained inconsistently, a low-commitment path exists — a Dimplex electric linear needs no venting or gas line at all, though it's a supplemental heater that goes dark in an outage, so it's honestly a different tool than a real gas linear.
