Can I replace my traditional fireplace with a modern linear one?
Yes, and Weaverville gives us two very different starting points. In the fast-growing Reems Creek new construction, owners often want a linear from the first remodel; in the older downtown homes, we're replacing an inefficient original masonry firebox. Both end the same way — a sealed, direct-vent linear on the natural-gas main, about 15 minutes north of us.
New builds and old downtown, different demolition
Reems Creek's newer homes usually have a prefab, zero-clearance box — we pull the whole factory unit and frame the linear cleanly into the wall cavity, no masonry to fight. Downtown Weaverville's older houses tend to have real brick fireboxes with inefficient open hearths; there we cap the original flue and set the linear into or in front of the opening, because a direct-vent unit runs its own sealed pipe out a nearby wall and never needs that chimney again. Natural gas serves much of town, so the Napoleon Vector 50 or a similar linear taps the existing line.
From heat-loser to real heater
An open masonry fireplace can actually run a net heat loss — it pulls warm room air up the flue. Swapping in a sealed linear flips that: combustion air comes from outside, the glass keeps room air in, and you get usable output instead of a draft. Weaverville's north-facing valley is slow to warm in spring, so that sealed performance matters into the shoulder seasons. We size the unit to the room rather than overselling the biggest box.
