Can I service my gas fireplace myself, or does it require a professional?
Brevard's answer starts with your rain: at 80-plus inches a year, moisture is the enemy of every gas connection and vent in town, so cleaning the glass is fine but the corrosion checks are a professional's job. Adjusting the valve, pilot, or connectors is licensed Transylvania County work, and in this climate those parts need trained eyes, not a homeowner's guess.
Water gets into everything here
Transylvania County's wet season runs March through June, and 80-plus inches of annual rain cracks chimney crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers and connectors faster than in drier towns. Crawl spaces and chimney chases — where a lot of Brevard gas piping and venting runs — are especially prone to it. You can keep the glass clean and watch for staining or rust you can see, but the flex connector, the shutoff, and the vent pipe need a professional inspection you can't safely perform. Corrosion on a gas line isn't a wait-and-see item.
Propane out at the cabins changes the rules
Downtown Brevard has gas service, but plenty of homes toward Connestee Falls and the surrounding mountains run on propane. Propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures than natural gas — get that wrong and you get soot and unsafe combustion. It's one more reason the gas side isn't a DIY zone: setting pressure and confirming the right orifice is licensed work, and our annual service verifies it every year.
