Candler, North Carolina

Can I service my gas fireplace myself, or does it require a professional?

Much of Candler runs on propane, with newer subdivisions increasingly tying into gas as the area grows, and either fuel makes the service a professional's job. You can clean the glass and change batteries. The pilot, valve, propane pressure, and venting are licensed Buncombe County work, and in Hominy Valley's bowl, clean combustion isn't just about the appliance — it's about the air.

Fuel first

Candler's fast growth has filled it with basic, decorative builder-grade fireboxes, and the fuel underneath them varies — propane on many properties, natural gas in the newer subdivisions closer to the mains. Propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures than gas, so a setup that's off soots and burns poorly. Correcting that means opening the gas side, which is licensed contractor work — and our annual service confirms the pressure, orifice, and combustion are right for whichever fuel you're on.

Why clean combustion matters in the bowl

Hominy Valley sits in a natural bowl that can trap air, which is exactly why clean-burning, sealed appliances are worth having here — and why a well-maintained fireplace matters beyond your own comfort. A sooty, poorly tuned burner puts out more than a clean one does. A yearly professional service keeps combustion clean; between visits, your job is the visible upkeep, glass and batteries and a clear vent. Many owners of those decorative builder-grade boxes eventually want a real heat-producing upgrade — a sealed insert — which needs the licensed gas line and permit.
