Can my old builder-grade prefab (zero-clearance) wood fireplace take an insert, or does it need a full unit replacement?
In Asheville it depends on which of our two housing worlds your fireplace lives in. The prefab question rarely touches Montford or North Asheville — those are original masonry. It's the newer South and West Asheville builder-grade zero-clearance boxes that raise it, and whether one takes an insert comes down to the firebox's tested listing, not its age alone.
Which Asheville home are we talking about?
Historic-core homes tend to have masonry fireboxes — a different conversation. The prefab issue lives in the newer South Asheville tract homes and West Asheville infill, where factory-built zero-clearance boxes went in through the '90s and 2000s. Each one carries a rating plate, and a wood insert is legal only where that plate and the insert manufacturer's manual name each other as a tested pair. Plenty of builder-grade boxes were never rated to hold one at all.
