Can my old builder-grade prefab (zero-clearance) wood fireplace take an insert, or does it need a full unit replacement?
In Candler, many of these boxes are new — fast-growing subdivisions put in basic decorative fireboxes owners soon want to actually heat. Newer doesn't mean it accepts an insert, though: the listing decides. And with much of Candler in propane country, a gas replacement here means an LP unit rather than a gas-main hookup.
New box, still a listing question
Candler's growth has filled Enka-Candler and Hominy Valley with builder-grade fireboxes meant to look good more than to warm a room. Age isn't the issue on a newer box — the listing is. An insert is legal only where the firebox's rating plate and the insert manufacturer's manual name each other as a tested pair, and plenty of decorative builder boxes were simply never rated to hold one.
Propane and clean air
Candler is propane country, so a gas replacement is set up for LP — propane burns hotter per unit and needs the right orifices and pressures, and connecting it is licensed work we permit with Buncombe County and pressure-test. The Hominy Valley bowl traps air, which is a good reason to favor a clean-burning sealed direct-vent unit over an open, smoky box — a Kozy Heat Springfield 36 suits the fuel and the setting.
