Can my old builder-grade prefab (zero-clearance) wood fireplace take an insert, or does it need a full unit replacement?

An insert is legal only where the prefab's rating plate and the insert manufacturer's manual name each other as a tested pair, and many builder boxes were never rated for one.
Propane and grid-independent options
Fairview is propane country, so a gas replacement means an LP unit set up for the fuel — a Kozy Heat Springfield 36 is built for it. If you want heat that runs with the power out, an EPA-certified Regency Grandview G600C or a Valor H5 that needs no electricity at all fits these rural lots. Propane connection is licensed work we permit with Buncombe County and pressure-test.
