Can one gas fireplace or wood stove heat an entire house?

In Waynesville, plan on more heater than you'd need down the mountain. At nearly 2,650 feet the heating season runs about three weeks longer and 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville's, so a single unit has to be sized generously. One properly sized wood stove can carry an open main level; a drafty Hazelwood open fireplace will not heat the whole house.

Elevation changes the math

That rule of thumb of roughly 20 BTU per square foot assumes a moderate climate — Waynesville is not moderate. At this elevation nights turn bitter early and stay that way, so a fireplace that would comfortably heat a room in Fletcher can fall short here. Size up. A Regency wood stove rated for a good square footage, set in a central open spot, is the closest thing to whole-home heat in a Haywood County house, and it keeps working when the power's out.

The trouble with old Hazelwood hearths

Much of Waynesville's older Hazelwood housing leans on original open masonry fireplaces, and an open fireplace is a poor whole-home heater — a lot of its warmth, and your room air, goes straight up the flue. Homes here rely on their hearths more than most, which is exactly why a sealed insert or a real wood stove pays off: it turns one drafty firebox into an appliance that actually holds the main living zone through a long mountain winter.

Zone heat, done honestly

No single unit will push heat down a hallway into closed back bedrooms, so we frame most Waynesville homes as heating a warm core with central heat as backup for the rest. We pull the permit with Haywood County and meet the inspector, and any gas line gets pressure-tested. A free in-home visit tells us what your layout and elevation really need. Call (828) 545-0525.
