The manufacturer positions each log so the burner's flame threads between and over them without ever hitting a cold ceramic surface head-on. That clean path is what lets the fuel burn out completely. Shift a log a couple of inches and the flame now strikes it mid-burn, chills, and drops its leftover carbon as soot — on the log, on the glass, sometimes on the wall.
