Do electric fireplaces come in freestanding stove styles?
Yes. Electric stoves are a popular category — freestanding units shaped like a classic cast-iron stove, with a glowing flame effect behind glass and a heater that plugs into a standard outlet. Dimplex, the electric line we carry, makes some of the most realistic ones. They add ambiance anywhere, but remember: electric puts out only supplemental heat and goes dead in a power outage.
How an electric stove works
An electric stove mimics the shape and charm of a freestanding wood or gas stove, but there's no fire, no fuel line, and no venting. Inside is an LED flame effect — Dimplex builds the most convincing electric flame on the market — plus a small fan heater. It plugs into a regular 120-volt outlet, so it can sit anywhere you can reach a receptacle: a bedroom corner, a finished basement, a sunroom, an apartment. No chimney, no gas permit, no clearances the way a real fire needs.
What it will and won't do
Be clear-eyed about heat. An electric stove is a supplemental heater — figure roughly 5,000 BTU, around 1,500 watts, enough to take the chill off a room up to about 400 square feet, not to heat a house. Many run flame-only in summer so you get the glow without the warmth.
And because it runs on electricity, it's dead the moment the power is — which matters here. After Helene, electric hearths went dark while wood and gas stoves kept homes warm. If backup heat is the goal, a gas or wood stove is the honest answer.
When an electric stove is the right call
For a rental, a room with no gas access, or a spot where running a vent or gas line isn't worth it, an electric stove is a clean, affordable way to add a fireplace feel — flame at the flip of a switch, no hauling wood, no cold-start smoke. It's also a smart plug-in accent for a bedroom where a real fire would be overkill.
