What all that Transylvania rain does to a hearth
Brevard's wet season runs March through June, and the water finds everything — it rusts a steel damper, spalls the face of a brick chimney, and rots the crown until it leaks down the flue. Crawl spaces and chimney chases here stay damp longer than most of WNC, so the annual inspection leans hard on water: crown, cap, flashing, liner, and any rust inside the firebox. Catching a cracked crown in late summer is a small fix; letting it run another wet spring is how you end up relining a chimney.
