Old chimneys, old clay liners
A fireplace built in the 1800s has usually been relined at least once, and the clay flue tiles that were standard for generations crack, shift, and spall with age and heat. On a historic Flat Rock hearth, the annual is a real chimney appointment: a sweep, a creosote inspection, and a careful look at the liner and crown to CSIA and NFPA standards. Oversized open fireboxes also draft hard and, in cold weather, run a net heat loss while a plug of cold air sits in the flue — the yearly check keeps the draft honest and the smoke going up, not into the parlor.
Keeping the character, killing the draft
