Do gas fireplaces require a safety barrier screen over the glass by code?
Yes. Since January 2015, every new vented gas fireplace sold in the U.S. must come with a factory safety barrier screen — a protective mesh that stands off the glass — because the glass front can exceed 400°F and burn skin on contact. It's a mandatory ANSI standard baked into the units we install, and the screen is included with the appliance from the factory.
The 2015 rule and why it exists
The glass on a running gas fireplace gets genuinely hot — well over 400 degrees — and stays hot for a while after you shut it off. Small kids and pets don't read the room. After too many contact burns, the industry standard (ANSI Z21.88) was updated so that as of January 1, 2015, every new listed gas fireplace, insert, and stove has to include a barrier screen between the glass and the room. It's not optional and it's not an upsell — it comes attached to the appliance we install, and we don't remove it.
Screen versus a decorative front
Don't confuse the mandatory safety barrier with the decorative doors, faces, and surrounds you can add for looks. The barrier screen is the fixed mesh that keeps a hand off the glass; decorative fronts from Heat & Glo, Napoleon, or Majestic sit outside that and are about style. On older units installed before 2015, the glass may be exposed — if you have young children and a pre-2015 fireplace, ask us about a retrofit safety screen for many models. Not every legacy unit has one available, but a lot of them do.
What it means for your install
In practice this is easy: the fireplaces we install already meet the standard, so there's nothing extra for you to source. We do talk it through with families, because a barrier screen still gets hot to the touch — it protects against direct glass contact, not against all heat, so a little household awareness with toddlers still matters.
