Do I need a bigger propane tank if I add a gas fireplace?

For most Asheville homes the question never comes up — you're on a natural-gas main, so there's no tank to size, and a fireplace just adds a short branch off the line already feeding your furnace. Only homes up the North Asheville ridges and the pockets the mains never reached run propane, and there the answer is usually still no.

Gas-main Asheville skips the tank entirely

From Montford and North Asheville to West Asheville and Biltmore Village, most of the city sits on natural-gas service. When you're on the main, adding a fireplace doesn't involve a propane tank at all — we run a licensed branch off your existing service, pull the Buncombe County permit, and pressure-test the line before it ever sees fuel. No refills, no tank pad, no vaporization math. Headquartered a few minutes away on Emma Road, we know which blocks have gas at the street and which don't.

When an Asheville home is on propane

Plenty of houses on the higher ground the mains never reached run off a stationary tank instead. If yours already feeds a furnace and water heater from a 250- or 500-gallon tank, a fireplace's 20,000 to 40,000 BTU is a small addition the tank absorbs without an upsize. The homes we flag are the ones running off a 100-pound cylinder or a tank that's already marginal for the house — and any home where the fireplace will be leaned on hard as outage heat through a cold Asheville snap.

We settle fuel before we quote

At the free in-home assessment we confirm whether you're on the main or a tank, add up the fireplace load against everything else drawing gas, and loop in your propane supplier if the tank looks tight — they handle the tank swap, we handle the licensed line and the appliance. One accountable company from the county permit to the pilot light, not a job stitched across a showroom and a separate gas fitter. Call (828) 545-0525.
