Most suppliers lease you a tank for a low annual fee, sometimes waived entirely, as long as you buy your propane from them, so there's little upfront but you're tied to their fuel pricing.
Owning the tank costs more out of pocket at the start and makes you responsible for its upkeep, but it frees you to shop for the cheapest propane each fill. Ask your supplier for both numbers before you decide.
Size drives the conversation
How big a tank you need, and therefore what it costs, depends on total load rather than the fireplace alone. If a furnace and water heater already run on propane, a fireplace may share the existing tank with no new tank at all.
