Does it matter whether I lease or own my propane tank when adding a fireplace?
Yes, it matters. If you lease the tank — the most common setup — the supplier owns it, controls who connects to it, and often requires you buy propane only from them, so you'll coordinate the addition through them. If you own your tank, you can choose any supplier freely but you're responsible for its upkeep and recertification.
Leased tanks: the supplier calls the shots
Most WNC propane homes lease the tank from their supplier. That's convenient — the supplier maintains it and handles recertification — but because it's their equipment, they set the rules on what connects to it. Adding a fireplace means looping them in, and some leases require the supplier to make or approve the tank-side connection, plus commit you to buying fuel only from them. None of that stops you adding a fireplace; it just means the supplier is part of the plan from day one. If you're not sure which you have, the tank data plate or your last invoice usually says.
Owned tanks: more freedom, more responsibility
If you own your tank, you're free to compare suppliers for the best propane price and add appliances without a lease agreement dictating terms. The tradeoff is that upkeep is on you: you're responsible for the tank's condition, any repairs, and any required recertification. When you add a fireplace, you'll still want to confirm the tank capacity and regulator handle the new load — but you're not asking anyone's permission to connect to your own equipment.
