Does it matter whether I lease or own my propane tank when adding a fireplace?
In Candler it depends which Candler you're in. Newer Enka-Candler subdivisions may reach the gas main, but much of the area — Hominy Valley, Sand Hill, and the Pisgah Highway edges — is propane country, so for a lot of homes the tank question is very real. Lease and the supplier sets the terms; own and you shop freely but carry the upkeep.
Subdivision gas, holler propane
Candler is one of Asheville's fastest-growing suburbs, and its fuel picture is genuinely split. The newer subdivisions closer to Enka may tie into the natural-gas main, in which case there's no tank and no leasing question. But out in Hominy Valley, Sand Hill, and toward the Pisgah Highway, propane still rules — those homes run on tanks, and lease-versus-own is a live decision. That's the first thing to pin down before planning an upgrade: main or tank. If you're on propane, leasing keeps upkeep and recertification with the supplier but governs your connection and fuel, while owning gives you supplier choice and the maintenance both.
A valley that rewards clean burning
Hominy Valley sits in a natural bowl that can trap air, which is exactly why a clean-burning sealed appliance makes sense here — a direct-vent gas unit draws its combustion air from outside and sends everything back out, rather than into the valley air or the room. Plenty of Candler's newer homes came with basic decorative builder-grade fireboxes that owners want to turn into real heat-producers within a few years, and that upgrade pairs naturally with getting the fuel setup right.
